Abstract
In early 2022, China drew attention to the successful implementation of its central bank digital currency named e-CNY in domestic and cross-border pilot programs. The Chinese government has banned cryptocurrencies, promoted e-CNY at the Beijing Olympics, and conducted international settlement transactions with four countries in the world through the m-Bridge project. In the midst of geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, China leads and has great influence for digital economic technology innovation in the world that is in sync with its national interests. In order to explain China's various interests in this regard, this study uses the theory of neorealism which was introduced by Kenneth N. Waltz and John J. Mearsheimer and the concept of national interests by Donald E. Nuechterlein. This research is a descriptive study and the data used are qualitative in nature obtained from various secondary sources. The results of this study found that behind the development and implementation of China's CBDC, there are both domestic and international economic interests, security interests over privacy data and threats from cryptocurrencies, world order interests as an alternative in the international payment system, to ideological interests related to Chinese Communist Party’s agenda. Meanwhile, the implementation of e-CNY is still faced with challenges from the duopoly of mobile payments by the private sector and cross-border coordination.
