Abstract

Research has been carried out on the synthesis of Bentonite/GO composites and their application in adsorption and photocatalysis of Congo Red dyes. The synthesized material was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET and SEM. GO was successfully synthesized by the formation of a peak at 2θ = 10.5° and an increase in d-spacing from graphite to GO with a value of 4.15973 Å to 8.9835 Å. The bentonite/GO composite with variations of 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5 showed a large peak at 2θ = 26.6. The main characteristic FTIR spectra of GO represent the functional groups C=O (1721 cm−1 ), C=C (1620 cm−1 ), OH (1363 cm−1 ), and C-O-C (1062 cm−1 ). In bentonite and bentonite/GO composites, the peak at 3619 cm−1 and the wide peak at 3374 cm−1 are the O-H bonds of AlOH. In the BET results, the total pore volume of the Bentonite/GO composite increased from 1.292 cm3 /g to 1.538 cm3 /g. Whereas the results from SEM show that GO has a layered structure and bentonite displays layers and structures in the form of a sponge that can be composited with GO. Optimum adsorption conditions and Congo Red photocatalyst showed that Bentonit/GO had the best adsorption capacity at pH 5. Meanwhile, the optimum concentration was 50 ppm and the optimum time was 75 minutes. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm model with an R2 value of 0.998. The results of this study indicated that the Bentonite/GO composite was able to remove the Congo Red dye well.
