Abstract

Breastmilk is the best source of nutrition recommended for babies aged 0-6 months. Aside from containing a complete source of nutrients, breastmilk contains various growth factors likewise, one of which is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that plays an important role in early life. The enzymes involved in BDNF synthesis require iron support in the process. Therefore, iron deficiency could cause the degression of BDNF levels in the brain as well as in other tissues, including in breast milk in breastfeeding mothers. This study aimed to discover the correlation between incidence of iron deficiency and breastmilk BDNF levels in breastfeeding mothers in Seluma District. This was a quantitative study with cross-sectional design involving 54 breastfeeding mothers with the duration of breastfeeding 1,5-6 months postpartum, who came from 4 working region of Puskesmas in Seluma District. Samples were taken by purposive sampling. Data analyses were done by using Chi-Square test and Microsoft Excel. The results found that 33 breastfeeding mothers (61,6%) had iron deficiency (serum ferritin levels < 37 μg/dL), and a total of 27 breastfeeding mothers (50,0%) had low breastmilk BDNF levels (breastmilk BDNF levels <15,55 μg/L). There was a significant correlation between iron deficiency and BDNF levels in breastfeeding mothers in Seluma District (p-value = 0,005). For breastfeeding mothers, it is suggested to fulfil iron intake during breastfeeding period with the purpose that the incidence of iron deficiency could be conquer so that the produced breastmilk has a good quality.
