Abstract

Javanese ginseng leaves (Talinum paniculatum (Jacq.) Gaertn) contains flavonoid compounds, one of which is quercetin as an antibacterial. This study aims to determine the variation in calcium chloride concentration as a crosslinker against the submicro particles produced and determine its antibacterial ability compared to Javanese ginseng leaf extract without polymers. Making submicro particles using the ionic gelation method by dispersing Javanese ginseng leaf extract into chitosan solution, then done drop by drop of sodium alginate and calcium chloride. The best formula is determined based on the highest %EE value, followed by particle characterization, stability test of the heating-cooling cycle method, and antibacterial activity test by disc paper diffusion method. The results of %EE formula 1, 2, and 3 were 89.796 %, 92.793 %, and 89.267 % respectively. The best formula characterization result (F2) shows a particle size of 538.4 nm; PDI 0.434; and zeta potential +15.9 mV. The results of the F2 stability test showed a decrease in percent levels by 4.121%. The results of the F2 antibacterial activity test showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibitory zone diameter of 22.00 mm ± 1.00 (strong category). It can be concluded that submicro particles of Java ginseng leaf extract have fairly good characterization and stability, as well as a greater antibacterial activity than unformulated Java ginseng leaf extract.
