Abstract

Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a traditional medicine so it is necessary to carry out safety tests, one of which is the subchronic toxicity test. This study aims to determine the effect subchronic toxicity of the ethyl acetate fraction of purple sweet potato leaves on male white rats of the Wistar strain. In this study, they were divided into 4 groups including the control group Na-CMC 0.5% and the ethyl acetate fraction of purple sweet potato leaves (110.5 mg/kgBW, 221 mg/kgBW and 442 mg/kgBW). Administration of preparations was carried out for 28 days and 14 days of observation of delayed effects. Parameters observed included body weight, blood hematology, blood biochemistry, macroscopic and histopathology of the liver and kidneys. The results showed that the change in body weight of the treated rats for 28 days and 42 days was not significantly different for each group (p>0.05). There was no significant difference in the blood biochemical and hematological parameters after administration of the test preparation for 28 days (p>0.05) but there was a significant difference in the SGPT levels of the rats (p<0.05). The average results of SGPT levels (U/L) on the 29th day in the control group and the dose group were 89.77±10.29; 67.38±9.60; 80.77±3.67 and 60.58±10.24. The results of examination of hematological and biochemical parameters of the blood for 42 days showed significant differences in the hemoglobin levels of the rats (p<0.05) with the results of the control group and the dose group respectively, namely 10.75±1.06; 14.05±0.35; 13.95±2.05 and 18.19±0.33. Liver and kidney macroscopy showed no significant difference in each group (p>0.05). The results of this study indicate that the administration of the ethyl acetate fraction of purple sweet potato leaves does not cause toxicity.
