Abstract

Background: A temporary soft liner (tissue conditioner) is typically material used as a temporary coating in cases of oral mucosal trauma caused by ill-fitting dentures. Soft liners are susceptible to contact with denture cleansing solutions, such as alkaline peroxide during clinical use. Continuous liquid penetration results in hydrolysis and dissolution of material constituents. The soft liner material's solubility may reduce its functionality. Thus, there is a necessity for alternative natural denture cleansers, that are antibacterial and antimicrobial, such as cinnamon extract. Aim: To evaluate the effect of time immersion in cinnamon extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) on the solubility of soft liner. Method: Twenty-four cylindrical soft liner samples, each measuring 15 mm x 2 mm, were used. The samples were divided into six groups: groups A and B were immersed in alkaline peroxide (for 7 and 14 days); groups C and D were immersed in 1.5% cinnamon extract (for 7 and 14 days); and groups E and F were immersed in distilled water (for 7 and 14 days). The solubility of the soft liner materials was evaluated by measuring the weight of the samples after 7 and 14 days of immersion. Data was analyzed using One-way ANOVA test and LSD Post Hoc test (p < 0.05). Result: The mean solubility was found highest in the group immersed in alkaline peroxide for 14 days and lowest in the group immersed in distilled water for 7 days. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference observed among all the groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There was an affect found time immersion in 1,5% cinnamon extract solution on solubility of soft liner materials.
