Abstract

This study aimed to described the representation of poverty in the novel Ayah by Andrea Hirata and described the implications in the study of literature in high school. This research used descriptive qualitative method, literature sociology approach, and data collection techniques in the form of documentation techniques. The theory used in this study is the theory of the classify poverty approach by Piven, Cloward, dan Swanson. The results of this study show that the representation of poverty contained in the Ayah novel by Andrea Hirata include: (1) material poverty which includes limited clothing, limited food, and limited board, (2) Income poverty which includes lack of adequate income, (3) Social poverty includes social exclusion, dependency. and lack of access to education, healthcare, and public services.
