Abstract

This research focuses on discussing the phenomenon of waria social networks in Pendopo Sub-district, Empat Lawang Regency. Waria refers to individuals who are biologically male but identify themselves as women, expressing themselves through feminine clothing and behavior. This phenomenon is considered deviant by society, leading to difficulties in its acceptance. The main objective of this study is to explore the social network and the presence of waria in Pendopo District, Empat Lawang Regency. A qualitative research method was employed, using purposive selection of informants to gain insights from those familiar with the subject matter. The findings reveal that waria's presence in Pendopo sub-district is now widespread, with individuals easily found in various places such as salons, homes, and weddings. Waria are openly expressing their identity within the community. Furthermore, the study identifies two types of social networks established by waria in Pendopo Subdistrict, Empat Lawang Regency: interest networks and emotional networks. These networks serve the purpose of establishing connections with fellow waria, seeking acceptance within the community, and finding customers for their salon businesses.
