Abstract

There has been investigation on the adsorption of the methylene blue dye using Fe3O4/SDS composites and Fe3O4 compounds. The coprecipitation process was used to create the adsorbent material. XRD, BET, VSM, and FTIR are used to characterize materials. The diffraction peaks of Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 and 2:1 are similar to JCPDS 65 - 3107 from Fe3O4. Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 and Fe3O4/SDS 2:1 have surface areas of 106.050 m2/g and 142.956 m2/g, respectively. The result of FTIR characterization, showing Fe-O, S=O, and O-H functional groups were present in the Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 composite's before adsorption, and on after adsorption showing C-N and C=N functional groups from methylene blue. The pHpzc of the composites Fe3O4/SDS 1:1, Fe3O4/SDS 2:1, and compound Fe3O4 are 9,2; 7,8; and 7,1, respectively. Under ideal circumstances, the Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 composite at a dye concentration of 250 mg/L obtained an adsorption capacity of 62.97 mg/g; the Fe3O4/SDS 2:1 composite at a substance concentration of 150 mg/L obtained an adsorption capacity of 43.95 mg/g; and the compound Fe3O4 at a dye concentration of 150 mg/L obtained an adsorption capacity of 40 minutes at a temperature of 30 oC. The adsorption isotherm for the Fe3O4 compound and the Fe3O4/SDS 2:1 composites and the Freundlich model for the Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 composite correspond to the Langmuir and Freundlich models, respectively, while the adsorption kinetics corresponds to the pseudo-second order. According to the results of thermodynamic parameter calculations, adsorption occurs exothermically and spontaneously on the Fe3O4/SDS 1:1 composite at 30 oC, on the Fe3O4/SDS 2:1 composite at 40, 50, and 60 oC, and not spontaneously on the compound Fe3O4.
