Abstract

Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) have been tested for acute toxicity at a dose of >2000 mg/KgBB which is classified as practically non-toxic, so further testing is required for teratogenic tests. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of safety of purple sweet potato leaves for the fetus when consumed by pregnant women. In this study, 4 treatment groups were used, namely control (Na-CMC), treatment (122, 244 and 488 mg/KgBW). Administration of the ethanol fraction of purple sweet potato leaves was given orally during organogenesis from day 9 to day 17 of pregnancy, after day 18 the sows were dissected for observation. Parameters for observation consisted of implantation, resorption, fetal weight, fetal length, external deformity and abnormalities of the fetal skeleton. Based on the results of the study, administration of the ethanol fraction of sweet potato leaves had a significant effect on the delay in the ossification of the posterior intermediate phalanges (F > F crit 0.05) and had a very significant effect on the delay in the ossification of the cervical vertebral bodies, the sacrocaudal vertebral bodies, the sacrocaudal vertebral arches, and the phalanges. anterior proximal, anterior intermediate phalanges and anterior proximal phalanges (F > F crit 0.01) compared to the normal group. Based on the DMRT test, it showed that a dose of 122 mg/KgBW was the minimum dose to cause teratogenic effects. The conclusion of this study is that the ethanol fraction of purple sweet potato leaves can cause teratogenic effects on mice fetuses.
