Abstract

Inadequate sleep is a common problem in all age groups and is considered a global public health epidemic. College students are a high-risk group with more than 60% suffering from sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality. Nursing students are students who experience poor sleep quality caused by lifestyle and poor sleep hygiene. This study aims to determine the effect of sleep hygiene education on the sleep quality of nursing students at Sriwijaya University. This type of research is a quantitative quasi-experimental with an interrupted time series design involving two groups. The research sample consisted of 32 respondents in the intervention group and 33 respondents in the control group who were taken using a stratified random sampling technique. The measurement tool used is the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) questionnaire. Statistical analysis in this study used repeated ANOVA and general linear models with post hoc. There is a significant effect of sleep hygiene education using video media and leaflets on the sleep quality of nursing students (p-value = 0.000) with post hoc test results p-value <0.05 in the first measurement after being given education, meaning that sleep hygiene education already affects the third day. There was no difference in sleep quality between respondents who were given sleep hygiene education using video and leaflet media (p>0.05). Improvement in sleep quality occurs because there is a process of increasing understanding and then respondents apply sleep hygiene and routine sleep hygiene monitoring is carried out. The provision of sleep hygiene education using both video and leaflet educational media accompanied by the application of sleep hygiene can be used to improve the sleep quality of nursing students.
