Abstract
The significant volume and value of Thrifting clothing imports in Indonesia indicate a strong preference for Thrifting among the public, including students at FISIP Sriwijaya University. As an alternative to conventional clothing consumption, this research aims to explore the motives and meanings behind the Thrifting trend as a lifestyle among students at FISIP Sriwijaya University, Indralaya Campus. The research method utilized is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach, drawing on Alfred Schutz's phenomenology theory. The findings reveal several motives driving students to engage in thrifting, including the influence of their social circles, family environment, exposure to social media, and proximity to thrift shops. The primary purpose behind thrifting is to obtain branded clothes at affordable prices while maintaining a stylish and fashionable appearance. Additionally, students are attracted to thrifting due to the availability of quality materials and a wider selection of clothing models, as well as to reduce overconsumption and negative impacts on the environment. As a lifestyle choice, the meaning of Thrifting manifests in three distinct forms of awareness: subjective, intersubjective, and objective. Subjective awareness refers to the sense of satisfaction and happiness experienced when acquiring high-quality goods at a lower cost. Thrifting clothes have become an integral part of their everyday wardrobe, enabling them to seize opportunities to acquire fashionable items inexpensively. Intersubjective awareness encompasses the interactions among students who share the thrifting practice, as well as interactions between students and thrift shop sellers. This sense of community fosters a positive atmosphere around thrifting as a lifestyle choice. Lastly, objective awareness pertains to how others perceive students who opt for thrifting clothes, and it is evident that this perception is largely positive. Based on these motives and awareness levels, the meanings derived from thrifting as a lifestyle include the significance of the meaning of frugality, looking stylish on a budget, the avenue for alternative self-expression, and the exclusivity associated with thrifting clothes.
