Abstract

Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) have many health benefits, but there are not enough studies on safety when used during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to determine the teratogenic effect of the n-hexane fraction of purple sweet potato leaves on mice fetuses. In this study there were 4 groups, namely control (NaCMC), P1 (140 mg/kgBW), P2 (280 mg/kgBW), and P3 (560 mg/kgBW). The n-hexane fraction of purple sweet potato leaves was administered orally on the 9th -17th day of pregnancy, after the 18th day the mice were dissected for observation. Parameters for observation consisted of dead fetus, live fetus, implantation, resorbed embryo, fetal body weight, fetal length, external abnormalities and fetal skeletal malformations. Based on the results of the ANOVA test, administration of the n-hexane fraction had no significant effect on dead fetuses, live fetuses, implantation, resorbed embryos, fetal body weight, fetal length, fetal external abnormalities, ossification of interparietal, supraoccipital, and sternal bones (F<f crit 0,05). The ANOVA test results had a significant effect on maternal weight gain, sacrocaudal vertebral body ossification, and anterior proximal phalanges (F>f crit 0,05). The ANOVA test results had a very significant effect on the ossification of the cervical vertebral body, the sacrocaudal vertebral arch, the anterior intermediate phalanges, the proximal phalanges and the posterior intermediate phalanges (F>f crit 0,01). Based on the DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test) test, the dose group of 140 mg/kgBW is the minimum dose of the n-hexane fraction of purple sweet potato leaves which is teratogenic to mice (Mus muscullus) fetuses.
