Abstract

Introductions: Dental age is related to an estimated age confirmed by evaluating the growth and development of a person's teeth. One of the methods used in identifying individual ages based on dental characteristics is the Willems method. However, previous studies have raised concerns about the accuracy of Willems' approach. Therefore, this study aims to test the accuracy of the Willems approach in finding differences between the chronological ages of the teeth between the ages of 6 to 12 years at RSKGM South Sumatra Province based on the results of panoramic radiography. Methods: The research design is analytically observational with a cross-sectional design approach. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling with a total of 286 samples. Results: There is no significant difference between dental age and chronological age in children aged 6-12 years with a p-value of 0.113 (p-value>0.05).. However, there is an estimation of the age difference between males with a p-value 0,751 (p-value>0,05) and females with a p-value 0,025 (p-value<0,05) by sex using the Willems method, which is due to variations of tooth dentition at eruption between individuals of different sexes. Conclusion: The Willems method for estimation can be used in children aged 6-12 years. But the Willems method shows a difference in the results of age estimation between male and female.
