Abstract

Gosip merupakan bentuk komunikasi yang sangat populer di kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia, sehingga motif sosial yang mendorong perilaku bergosip akan bermanfaat untuk memahami fenomena ini. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran motif sosial bergosip pada masyarakat Indonesia. Pengukuran motif sosial bergosip dilakukan dengan menggunakan skala baku Motives to Gossip Questionnaire (MGQ) oleh Beersma & Van Kleef (2012) yang dimodifikasi oleh peneliti. MGQ terdiri dari 48 aitem untuk mengukur empat motif sosial bergosip; Information Gathering & Validation, Social Enjoyment, Negative Influence dan Group Protecting dengan nilai koefisien cronbach alpha masing-masing 0,938, 0,933, 0,893 & 0,908. Analisis yang digunakan adalah teknik statistik deskriptif. Partisipan pada penelitian ini adalah 278 anggota masyarakat Indonesia yang pernah melakukan perilaku bergosip. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan mayoritas masyarakat Indonesia memiliki kecendrungan untuk menggunakan motif sosial bergosip Information Gathering & Validation, Social Enjoyment dan Group Protecting yang tinggi dan Negative Influence yang rendah.
