Abstract

This research discusses the results of a study regarding the effect of thermal aging time on the dielectrick strength of Rice Bran Oil which is given a mixture of the compound Benzyl Benzoate (BnBzO), with concentration variations of 5; 10; and 15 wt%. The samples were placed into a galvanized vessel and then subjected to thermal treatment using a mechanical oven with various treatment times (0; 16; and 24 hours). The breakdown voltage test was carried out using a spherical electrode system ∅ = 13mm with an interval of 1mm between the electrodes with the application of a high AC voltage which was increased slowly until a complete breakdown occurred. In the Rice Bran Oil sample without mixture, it obtained a VBD value of 3.80 kV. The addition of BnBzO compounds can increase the VBD value to 4.17; 4,28; and 4,49 kV respectively for each concentration. This increase is quite significant, compared to the sample without being given a mixture. However, the provision of thermal treatment at each concentration of the mixture has an effect on the aging process in the oil, which is indicated by a decrease in the VBD value associated with the length of treatment time. Measurements showed that there was an almost consistent trend of decreasing breakdown voltage values at each concentration of the mixture following the length of treatment time. A significant decrease occurred in the samples that were not mixed, the VBD values decreased to 3.65 and 3.44 kV. The result of measuring the viscosity value at each concentration is 2.46 × 10^(-5); 2.03× 10^(-5); 1.92× 10^(-5) dan 1.83× 10^(-5)dPas.
