Abstract

This qualitative research explores the journey of language acquisition of two Third Culture Kids from different countries living in Indonesia and currently matriculated in Educational Institutions in the country. The data collected through interviews and artefacts revealed that both of them shared similar characteristics as traditional TCKs according to Pollock and Reken’s framework of TCKs. They were raised in a third culture, with high sense of mobility and with expected expatriation. Furthermore, their journey of language acquisition started at home when their parents decided to implement a family language policy by teaching their children the language of their passport country. In this study TCK’s parents applied OPOL and Translanguaging as language approaches to raise the children bilingual. Due to language choices the children chose to use English as their first language. Moreover parents played an extremely important role in their children’s language acquisition journey, as they were responsible for applying literacy practices at home as well as choosing the right educational institutions according to their children’s needs.
