Abstract

In an effort to overcome the problem of the diminishing availability of fossil energy. On the other hand, 80% of power plants in Indonesia use energy derived from fossils. Hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) is one of the options in tackling this problem. Given that there is so much energy potential derived from water in this country. From the results of the study, the research was focused on pico-scale Crossflow turbines (< 5 kW). The Crossflow turbine was chosen because it has a high level of effectiveness and tends to be simple in construction. In the analytical study, it shows that there is an effect of the absolute speed ratio on the performance of Crossflow turbines with the best ratio being at a ratio of 0.5 at an angle α_1=22° and an angle β_1=39° . Based on previous journals, there are several factors that affect Crossflow turbine performance. One of them is the lamda angle or the discharge angle in the nozzle which affects the performance of any Crossflow turbine design. Furthermore, CFD simulations were run to test the performance of the designed Crossflow turbine at 5 different lamda angles. It was found that the maximum performance is found at 90° lambda at 600 rpm rotation with an efficiency of 72.57%. These results are in accordance with analytical calculations which obtain an efficiency of 73.8% which only has a difference of less than 2% to the simulation results.
