Abstract
The phenomenon of using thrift fashion among teenagers in Palembang City is currently popular. With the big thrift fashion events, teenagers switch to using thrift fashion as their style of dress. This research aims to find out the meaning and self-concept formed in teenage thrift fashion users in Palembang City. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method, involving four teenage thrift fashion users as a source of data and writing information. The data collection process was carried out by means of in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. To analyze the research findings, the author used George Harbert Mead's symbolic interaction theory, namely mind, self, society. The results of this study show that the meaning of teenagers towards thrift fashion is not just ordinary used clothes, but fashion to increase the value of self for its users. In addition, the self-concept that is formed in adolescents is the desire to appear fashionable, improve self-existence in their social environment and the satisfaction for adolescents when using thrift fashion. The process of self-concept formation in adolescents is supported by the positive views of their closest people such as parents, relatives and friends.
