Abstract

The significant potential in the agricultural sector, especially in rice cultivation in Pemulutan District, has led the majority of its community to work as farmers. Farmers employ various methods to produce high-quality agricultural products and protect crops from pests, one of which is the use of pesticides. This study aims to analyze factors related to the handling behavior of organophosphate pesticides among rice farmers in Pemulutan District. The methodology applied in this study employs a cross-sectional design with cluster sampling, encompassing a sample size of 106 farmers. The data collection was carried out through the implementation of questionnaires and observations directed towards the respondent. The statistical test used descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression as the predictive model. The research findings indicate a significant relationship between education level (pvalue = 0.004), knowledge (p-value = 0.038), attitude (p-value = 0.007), and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) (p-value = 0.015) with the handling behavior of pesticides among rice farmers in Pemulutan District. However, there was no significant relationship found between age (p-value = 0.655), pesticide mixing (p-value = 0.353), and work experience (p-value = 0.680) with pesticide handling behavior. In conclusion, higher levels of education, knowledge, positive attitudes, and the use of PPE among rice farmers lead to better pesticide handling behavior. Thus, there is a necessity for enhancing farmers' knowledge concerning the safe usage of pesticides and the significance of employing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during agricultural practices to mitigate the risk of adverse pesticide effects on farmers' health and the environment.
