Abstract
The high demand to get large quantity and quality horticultural products (not disturbed by insects), makes many farmers use pesticides so that the plants are not disturbed by pests. The use of organophosphate pesticides can cause acute and chronic health problems. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between health complaints among rice farmers using organophosphate pesticides in Penuguan Village, Penuguan Strait District. The research method applies quantitative methods with Cross Sectional research design. The sample size is 51 farmers using pesticides, taken using purposive sampling. Observation and interview data collection methods, as well as using a measuring tool questionnaire and nutritional status values are measured by BMI values. Data analysis techniques used univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. The results of the bivariate analysis showed age (P= 0.023), years of service (P= 0.012), duration of spraying (P= 0.514), use of PPE (P= 0.009), nutritional status (P= 0.876), dosage of pesticide use (P=0.007), frequency (P= 0.938) and amount of spraying mixture (P= 1.000). It was concluded that there was a relationship between age, years of service, use of PPE and dosage of pesticide use with health complaints, then there was no relationship between spraying duration, nutritional status, frequency of spraying and the amount of mixture with health complaints. It is recommended that farmers use complete PPE, do not mix more than 1 type of pesticide when spraying and reduce the frequency of spraying in order to minimize health complaints due to exposure to pesticides.
