Abstract

Self-care is important in improving the quality of life and improving the welfare of people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Self-care that is carried out effectively will be able to control the patient's blood sugar levels so that complications do not occur. This study aims to determine the description of self-care activity or self-care in diabetes mellitus patients. Types of Descriptive Observational Research. The sample in this study was 88 respondents who were obtained using purposive sampling at the Makrayu Community Health Center in Palembang. This study used The Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaire. The results of this study found that respondents in the study dominated by the age range of 45-59 years (58%), female sex (55.7%) respondents did not work, last education was Elementary School (53.4%) had suffered from DM for 1 -5 years (50%) of respondents. Respondents did not have complications 80.7% and 19.3% have complications. Smoking habits, namely 9 male respondents who smoked 1-2 packs per day. self care activity diabetes mellitus patients with good self care as many as 44 respondents and less self care as many as 44 respondents. The level of self-care for each component of self-care activity carried out by patients is a good diet (53.4%), good physical activity 69.3%, good foot care 100% of respondents, taking medication in a good category 86.4% of respondents and good blood sugar monitoring 72.7%. Self-care that is carried out regularly will help DM sufferers control blood sugar levels, to improve the patient's health status.
