Abstract
Candida albicans is a commensal microorganism in the oral cavity that can cause oral candidiasis under spesific conditions. Oral candidiasis can be treated topically or orally but both have side effect. Therefore, natural products which have fewer side effects are needed as alternative treatment. Papaya leaf contains saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannin which had reported that possess some antifungal properties. This study aimed to determine the influence of papaya leaf infusion (Carica papaya L.) in various concentration against C. albicans. This study used post test only control group design. There were 7 groups consisted of papaya leaf infusion concentration of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, positif control using nystatin and negative control using aquadest. The dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), while inhibitory zone was tested using agar well diffusion method. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA followed by Post-Hoc Bonferroni test. The result showed that the papaya leaf infusion significantly inhibited the growth of C. albicans compared with negative control with p=0,00 (p<0,05), but the efficacy was still less than positive control. Inhibiton zone of papaya leaf infusion was started to form at concentration of 20%. The higher concentration showed the higher mean inhibition zone. MIC and MBC value of papaya leaf infusion was 10%. It can be concluded that papaya leaf infusion can be used as an alternative of antifungal agent.
