Abstract

Composite is one of the materials that can be used as a reference for new products made and can even be used as the main ingredient in a product. Composites consist of a polymer-based matrix and fiber as reinforcement. The purpose of the research is to determine the mechanical characteristics of chopped fiber type pineapple leaf fiber biocomposite. The research was carried out 22 Mey 2023 to 4 August 2023 at the Biosystems Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, South Sumatra and tested at the Material Engineering Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Sumatera Institute of Technology. The research method to be used is descriptive method with the treatment of pineapple leaf fiber mixture and polyester resin with chopped fiber direction type. The treatment factor consists of three levels of treatment with a volume fraction of pineapple leaf fiber and polyester resin of 40%:60%, 50%50% and 60%:40% and the treatment is tested with two repetitions. with the research parameters consisting of tensile strength, elastic modulus and bending strength. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the increasing fiber volume fraction is directly proportional to the increase in tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and flexural strength. The 60% fiber volume fraction produced the highest tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and bending strength with a tensile strength value of 33.66 MPa, modulus of elasticity of 1.42 GPa and flexural strength of 1535.93 MPa, while the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity was the lowest flexural strength at 40% volume fraction with a value of 12.68 MPa for tensile strength, modulus of elasticity of 0.992 GPa and 544.10 MPa for bending strength.
