Abstract
Disclosing agent is a dye which is used to coloring dental plaque. Besides to synthetic materials, natural subtances such as betacyanin also can be used as disclosing agent. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of red fleshy dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) containing betasianin as a natural disclosing agent by measuring color absorption in dental plaque and comparing it with erythrosine. The samples were divided into 2 groups, that is erythrosine group (n = 16) and dragon fruit peel extract group (n = 16), each samples were 5ml with 1% solution concentration. Dental plaque samples used in this study were 16 mg of each group taken from 1 research subject who had been quarantined. Measurement of color absorption (absorbance) of dragon fruit peel extracts and erythrosine was carried out before (pretest) and after (posttest) added dental plaque using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 534 nm (betasianin) and a wavelength of 526 nm (erythrosin). Statistical test results showed that there were significant differences between the color absorption of red fleshy dragon fruit peel extract and erythrosine before and after added dental plaque and there was a significant difference between the color absorption of red fleshy dragon fruit peel extract and erythrosin in dental plaque. The conclusion of this study is that the red fleshy dragon fruit peel extract is effective as a natural disclosing agent, but its effectiveness is lower than erythrosine.
