Abstract

Nearly 80% of South Sumatra Province's coal potential is dominated by low rank coal in the form of lignite and subbituminous. The use of low rank coal must consider the environment, especially air pollution by greenhouse gases consisting of CO2 and CH4 gases which are very influential on global warming. CH4 gas is a gas that has the potential to cause global warming because its impact is 80 times stronger than CO2 gas. This study aims to develop a simple equipment for burning low rank coal by modifying existing models to analyze CH4 gas emissions on a laboratory scale. The method used in this research includes modification of the coal fixed-bed combustion model, combustion process, data collection, statistical testing, analysis of CH4 gas emission data related to temperature and burning time for sub-bituminous coal with differences in the calorific value of BA-59 and BA-63. The results showed that the coal burning equipment designed and built by modifying the coal fixed-bed combustion model can be used to analyze the emission characteristics of CH4 gas; the formation of CH4 gas emissions will be higher in BA-59 coal compared to BA-63 coal by 4.8 ppm and 1.3 ppm respectively; the combustion temperature of lower calorie coal will be lower than that of higher calorie coal, respectively 31oC and 40oC; and the incubation time for the formation of CH4 gas emissions occurs faster in lower calorie coal, respectively 7 minutes and 10 minutes, while the burning time of coal for lower calorie coal will be longer than higher calorie coal, respectively 72 minutes and 53 minutes.
