Abstract

Background: Gingival pigmentation is a discoloration that comes from melanin granules which can be caused by exogenous and endogenous factors, one of which is smoking. Nicotine found in conventional and electric cigarettes can activate melanocytes to produce melanin, so consuming cigarettes can affect gingival pigmentation. Purpose: To determine the differences in the appearance of gingival pigmentation in electric and conventional smokers using the Dummett-Gupta Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI). Methods: Analytically observational with a cross-sectional approach. The subjects of this study were students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Sriwijaya as many as 50 respondents using the consecutive sampling technique. The study was conducted objectively to see gingival pigmentation and then classified using the Dummett-Gupta Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI). Data were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-Test. Results: The results showed that light gingival pigmentation was experienced by 23 electric smokers and 11 conventional smokers, while moderate gingival pigmentation was experienced by 2 electric smokers and 14 conventional smokers. The average Dummett-Gupta Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI) value obtained in conventional smokers is greater than that of electric smokers. Conclusion: There were differences in the appearance of gingival pigmentation in electric and conventional smokers using the Dummett-Gupta Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI).
