Abstract

Background: Probiotics in dentistry had been proving effective in treating various diseases. Studies about probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri has been shown to significantly reduce the number of periodontal pathogenic bacteria in patient with periodontitis. However, research about the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri on periodontal index in the management of chronic periodontitis is still very limited. Objective: To determine the effect of scaling and root planing therapy with probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri as an adjunct on periodontal index in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods: This research is a systematic review with quantitative analysis. The journal database used are PubMed, DOAJ and Google Scholar. The literature used was an English journal with a publication period of the last 10 years. The journals obtained were selected, then bias analysis and data extraction will be carried out and followed by meta-analysis. Result: Quantitative analysis was conducted on five journals showed that probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri as an adjunct after scaling and root planing therapy had a moderate effect on the bleeding on probing for healing chronic periodontitis. Conclusion: Scaling and root planing therapy with probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri as an adjunct had a moderate effect on the healing of chronic periodontitis.
