Abstract

Lightweight concrete is categorized as a concrete that contains lightweight aggregate, and as defined in ASTM C-567 that its air-dry mass weighs not more than 1900 kg/m3 (Mulyono, 2004). In this study, rubber seeds are used as lightweight aggregates in concrete. The purpose of using rubber seed is to intensify its utilization as it is a massive by-product of plenteous rubber plantations that are spread all over Indonesia. In this study, the weight proportion of cement, water, and sand is equal to 1: 0.52: 1.70. The percentages of rubber seeds added to concrete are 25%, 50%, 75% of the volume of each specimens. Furthermore, type F additives namely Viscocrete-10 is used in the mixture to reduce water usage of more than 30% when its proportion from weight of cement is 1,25%. All in all, The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of adding rubber seeds (25%, 50%, and 75%) and additives (Viscocrete-10) toward the unit weight and compressive strength of concrete with the tests are conducted at the age of 7,21,and 28 days. The test results indicate that there is a decrement in unit weight of the rubber seed mixed concrete compared to mortar and normal concrete contained coral sifter. The unit weight decrement occured at 25%, 50%, 75% of rubber seeds are as much as 6.9%, 14.09% and 22.45%, respectively. Nevertheless, the unit weight of normal concrete with the amount of rubber seeds 25%, 50%, 75% consecutively decrease with the percentages as follows 14.34%, 23.72% and 33.65%. The compressive strength of rubber seed concrete increase resulting from the usage of Viscocrete 10. At the age of 7, 21, and 28 days, it is found that compressive strength of concrete is increasing with the percentages of 36.96%. 23.44% and 19.66%, respectively. The optimum amount of rubber seeds is found at 25%. The compressive strength of rubber seeds concrete with addition of Viscocrete-10 is found to be as much as 14.89 Mpa with 1828 kg/m3 in unit weight. In conclusion, the rubber seeds considered as medium-strength lightweight concrete in accordance with the classification of lightweight concrete by Winter and Nilon (1993). In addition, this type of concrete also can be applied as non-structural concrete.
