Abstract

Oil production in Indonesia continues to experience a decline in production every year, while the amount of consumption is increasing every year due to the ever-increasing number of vehicles which causes oil and oil prices to soar. One way to reduce the use of fossil fuels is to use alternative fuels such as ethanol and use spark plugs that can reduce fuel consumption from the ignition system. This study aims to determine the performance value of the Pertamax – ethanol fuel mixture in motorcycle engines using standard and iridium spark plugs. This study used an experimental method, with variations in the fuel mixture Pertamax - ethanol (0%, 50%, 100%) on engine performance at 1500 rpm, 2000 rpm, 2500 rpm, 3000 rpm and 3500 rpm. The engine performance parameters tested include torque, power, brake specific fuel consumption and thermal efficiency. Based on the test results, the use of ethanol as a mixture of Pertamax fuel can increase the torque value of standard spark plugs by 22% (E50), power by 22% (E50) of standard spark plugs, reduce the BSFC value of 24% (E100) of iridium spark plugs and increase thermal efficiency by 72% (E100). a) iridium spark plugs.
