Abstract
Soft clay is a type of clay that is classified into types of land thai has a small shear forces, huge congestion, small soil permeability and has a low bearing capacity than other clays. This can cause damage to the struclures that are on it. Therefore, careful planning is required in the manufacture of a vehicle in the area with the characteristics of the soil. Therefore, the soil improvement which aims to increase the canying capacity of the clay against the loads that exist on it is needed. One method of soil improvement that can be used is by installing the vertical drain which aims to accelerate the process of discharge of water in the soil so that the State of the soil volume change becomes increasingly compressed. This research was used alternalive vertical drain materials are fibers wrapped in gauze. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the use offiller fibers that wrapped in gauze as a vertical drain when applied in soft clay soil. In addition, this study also conducted to compare the time of consolidation that occurred on the ground with vertical drains and land without vertical drain. Diameter of material that was used in this experiment of 2.5 cm with a pattern that used was a rectangular pattern. Imposition was done by giving the pressure as much as three stages: a pressure of250 kg / m2, 500 kg / m2, and 750 kg / m2. The data obtained from the test results in the form of consolidation coefficient data and the length of time of consolidation. Based on data from the results ofthis study, the coefficient of consolidation of land by using vertical drainage ga wrapped fibers obtained amounted to 6.225 cm2 / sec. This resull was grealer than twice the value of the coefficient of consolidation of land without vertical drainage is 3.05 cm2 /sec.
