Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is one of the efforts to reduce infant mortality. The coverage of exclusive breastfeeding has decreased from year to year and has not reached the predetermined target. This is due to the lack of knowledge of mothers about exclusive breastfeeding. In addition, work, family beliefs and traditions that are still inherent in the environment can also hinder it. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge, work, beliefs and family traditions on exclusive breastfeeding. This research was a correlation analytic research with a cross sectional approach. The study sample amounted to 88 mothers who had babies aged 6-11 months who used purposive sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis using chi square test and logistic regression test. The results of the study showed that 38 mothers (43.2%) exclusively breastfed, 35 mothers (39.8%) had good knowledge, 48 mothers (54.5%) did not work, and 12 mothers (13.6%) did not follow family beliefs and traditions. The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between knowledge (0.036), family beliefs and traditions (0.007) on exclusive breastfeeding. There is no significant relationship between employment and exclusive breastfeeding (1.000). Suggestions for mothers to prepare themselves in advance by increasing knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding and finding out myths that can hinder it before the baby is born. For health workers to continue to provide counseling on exclusive breastfeeding with additional explanations of myths that can hinder exclusive breastfeeding. It is recommended that future researchers look for other factors that can inhibit exclusive breastfeeding.
