Abstract

Diarrhea is the leading cause of death in toddlers around the world, including Indonesia. The incidence of diarrhea in toddlers is supported by determinants, so it is worth doing research that can review and synthesize primary research on the determinants of diarrhea incidence in toddlers in Indonesia, namely with the Systematic Review method. Objective: to identify the determinants of diarrhea in toddlers in Indonesia in the form of behavioral factors and environmental factors, so that it can be known which determinants have the largest proportion in supporting the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Indonesia. Methods: Systematic Review design in May-June 2023, inclusion criteria: literature with: crosssectional design, case control, cohort, research location in Indonesia, Indonesian and English language, research article type, published in 2018-2023, minimum sample size of 30 samples, and free fulltext. The boolean operators: AND and OR, with a sample of 81 selected literature from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. Results: Behavioral factors (maternal knowledge, handwashing with soap behavior, exclusive breastfeeding history, and bottlefeeding behavior), and environmental factors (availability of clean water, healthy latrines, waste bins, and SPAL facilities) are determinants associated with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Indonesia. Conclusion: maternal knowledge is the factor that has the largest proportion in supporting the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Indonesia, as many as 43 studies (91%) of 47 studies that examined the relationship between maternal knowledge and the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers were statistically proven. The government should focus more on improving education/counseling programs, continuous health promotion both indoor and outdoor and various other media by health workers from various health facilities to all mothers of toddlers related to diarrhea and personal hygiene in order to increase maternal knowledge.
