Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is an endocrine disorder characterized by obstruction of insulin production that often found in the elderly. Poor glycemic control in diabetes mellitus patient will reduce salivary production. Denture function in patient was reported to increase salivary flow rate. The aim of this study was to compare salivary flow rate of diabetic elderly patients with and without removable denture. Analytic survey research with purposive sampling design was involving 40 elderly diabetes mellitus patients with age 45-59 years. Samples were divided into two groups, 20 samples of diabetic patients with removable denture, and 20 samples without removable denture. Unstimulated saliva was collected by spitting method for 5 minutes. Salivary flow rate was obtained by measuring saliva volume in ml/minute. Data were analyzed by unpaired T-test with significant levels p<0.05. The results showed that salivary flow rate of diabetic elderly patients with removable denture was significantly higher compared to patients without removable denture. This study showed that diabetic patients with tooth loss should use denture to increase their salivary flow rate.
