Abstract

Background: Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that occurs in the lung tissue. Children with pneumonia will experience respiratory problems caused by inflammation in the alveoli of the lungs. This infection will cause an increase in excess sputum production which will cause disruption of airway clearance. One of the non-pharmacological therapies that can be given is the practice of Pursed Lips Breathing. Pursed lips breathing exercises performed on children can nourish ventilation, free air trapped in the lungs, slow breathing frequency and increase relaxation. Purpose: Describe the results of pediatric nursing practice that focuses on nursing care in pneumonia children with nursing problems airway clearance is not effective and in accordance with evidence-based learning studies. Method: The method used is qualitative description with a case study approach and journal review in pneumonia patients. Results: There were 6 nursing problems that arose in all three patients and the main nursing problem was that airway clearance was ineffective. The implementation of pursed lips breathing exercises given for 3 days was evaluated that there was a decrease in respiratory rate and an increase in airway patentability in pneumonia patients. Discussion: Pursed lips breathing can help overcome airway ineffectiveness in pneumonia patients by increasing the development of alveolus in each lobe of the lung so that alveolar pressure increases and can help push secretions out of the airway during expiration and can induce breathing patterns to normal. Conclusion: pursed lips breathing intervention performed provides changes in airway patentability improvement and respiratory rate decrease in pneumonia patients.
