Abstract

Accurate measurement of occlusal vertical dimension is very important for making dentures. Occlusal vertical dimension could be measured using anthropometric methods. The anthropometric method is a method for measuring body dimensions using body structure measurements. The structure of the human body has a relationship that fits one and the other (golden proportion). Body structure measurement that can be used to determine the occlusal vertical dimension is the length of thumb. The body structure size is differ between race which influenced by genetic factors. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between the length of thumb and occlusal vertical dimension on Deutro Malays in Palembang. Methods. This is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The samples consist of 60 samples which were chosen with non-random sampling technique. Occlusal vertical dimension was measured using Willis method (lower face height) and anthropometric method (the length of thumb). Results. The ratio of occlusal vertical dimension and length of thumb for male is 1: 1,12 and for female is 1: 1,14 with the correlation value r = 0,272 and significance value p = 0,018. Conclusion. The occlusal vertical dimension and the length of thumb on men is greater than women. There is a positive correlation between the length of thumb and occlusal vertical dimension on Deutro Malays in Palembang
