Abstract
Background: Streptococcus mutans is a Gram-positive bacterium that is known as the main pathogen of dental caries. The use of chlorhexidine gluconate as an antibacterial agent can reduce Streptococcus mutans colonies, but if used for a certain period it can irritate the oral mucosa, change in tooth color, and changes in taste perception. Therefore, pineapple leaf as a natural ingredient are used as an alternative for preventing dental caries because they have an antibacterial effect. Objective: To determine the effect of pineapple leaf extract (Ananas comosus) with concentrations of 0.75%, 1.5%, 3%, 6%, and 12% on the diameter of the inhibition zone of S. mutans. Method: In vitro experimental laboratory study with a post-test only with control group design consisting of 7 groups, such as pineapple leaf extract concentrations of 0.75%, 1.5%, 3%, 6%, 12%, chlorhexidine 0,2% as a positive control, and distilled water as a negative control with repetition 5 times. The antibacterial potency was tested by using the disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer). Results: The antibacterial potency test showed that only 0.2% chlorhexidine could inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans with an average inhibition zone value of 6.16 mm. Conclusion: Prabumulih pineapple leaf extract (Ananas comosus) with concentrations of 0.75%, 1.5%, 3%, 6%, and 12% do not have antibacterial potency against Streptococcus mutans.
