Abstract

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is an external corrosion that occurs beneath the insulation layer due to water penetration. CUI becomes a primary concern for equipment insulated for more than 5 years and can lead to significant losses and even fatal accidents if left undetected. CUI is a serious issue, particularly in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and offshore industries. This research focuses on testing CUI on ASTM A36 steel specimens immersed in seawater and swamp water. The initial process involves welding ASTM A36 steel with dimensions of 100x100x10 mm using E7018 electrodes, followed by dye penetrant testing. Normalization heat treatment is conducted at a temperature of 880°C, and then the steel is weighed and insulated with PVC tape on all surfaces except the top. Specimens are immersed for 7 and 14 days in seawater and swamp water. Subsequently, corrosion rate testing, metallography, Brinell hardness testing, and impact testing are performed. The test results reveal that the specimen without insulation and immersed for 7 days in swamp water exhibit the highest corrosion rate, reaching 0.2035875 mpy. The highest hardness is recorded in the specimen immersed in swamp water, reaching 116 BHN, while the specimen immersed in seawater achieve 118 BHN. Impact testing indicates that specimen immersed for 14 days in swamp water without insulation have the highest value, measuring 134 Joules. Metallography shows that normalization forms a microstructure dominant in ferrite, pearlite, and ferrite widmanstatten phases, influenced by the slow cooling process in the alloy.
