Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) Type 2 is caused by an increase in blood sugar due to a decrease in insulin secretion by the pancreatic gland. DM management in hospitals only focuses on medication and diet but physical activity is still low. One of the physical activities that can be done by patients with type 2 DM is range of motion (ROM). Range of motion (ROM) is an exercise carried out to increase the ability to maintain or improve normal and complete joint movement and increase muscle mass and tone (Suriati, 2019). ROM is a muscle relaxation technique that is very easy and practical because the movements are easy and can be done anytime and anywhere. Objective: Apply nursing care, especially with Diabetes Mellitus patients Method: The method used was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. Results and discussion: There were 4 nursing diagnoses that emerged, namely acute pain, impaired physical mobility, impaired skin integrity, and risk of infection. Two managed patients had pedis gangrene wounds and one managed patient had surgery or amputation of the left leg. The intervention given to overcome physical mobility disorders is ROM therapy which is carried out with 8 movements by tightening and relaxing the muscles which include the back neck muscles, front neck muscles, hand muscles, back hand muscles, arm muscles, shoulder muscles, back, and leg muscles. After being given ROM therapy for 3 consecutive days with 1 session a day lasting 10 - 15 minutes per session, muscle strength increased and muscle stiffness decreased. Conclusion: Providing range of motion (ROM) therapy has an effect on increasing muscle strength and reducing joint stiffness. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Nursing Care, Range of Motion (ROM) Therapy
