Abstract
Background: Fixed orthodontic treatment may increase plaque accumulation and the number of Streptococcus mutans that may cause tooth demineralization around the bracket and form caries. Studies reported that probiotic drinks can reduce colony number of salivary S. mutans. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of consuming various probiotic drinks on colony number of salivary S. mutans in fixed orthodontic user. Material and Methods: This experimental research with pre-test and post-test control group design was conducted on 40 respondents which were divided randomly with single blind method into 4 groups. Respondents were instructed to consume for 7 days probiotic drinks containing Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophillus in group 1, Lactobacillus casei in group 2, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delburecki subps. Bulgaricus in group 3, and aquadest in group 4. Unstimulated saliva was collected at baseline and after intervention then inoculated on mitis salivarius bacitracin agar. S. mutans were counted and expressed in cfu/ml. Data statistical analysis was done using paired t test and one way anova test. Result: The results showed that a significant reduction in colony number of salivary S. mutans (p<0,05) was observed in all groups after 7 days. There was no significant difference between groups of probiotic drinks. Conclusion: These finding suggest that probiotic drinks can reduce colony number of salivary S. mutans in fixed orthodontic user so it can help to prevent caries.
