Abstract

This research aims to find out the development of technology today brings changes in lifestyle for some people. Social media is often considered the most effective media in providing information and even mobilizing the masses, because publication through social media is also a powerful way to gain public sympathy. Currently, there is a term pansos, which stands for the word social climbing, which has actually been known as social climbing or attention seeker. The term social climber is usually used for someone who is active on the internet or social media, but tends to seek attention from his followers as a person who has a high social class. This research will use descriptive qualitative research methods, in this research it is necessary to understand the phenomenon of social climbing that occurs at Sriwijiya University. The findings of this study are that social climber students construct their social status through what they wear and what is attached to them. Like through fashion, where they eat or hang out and through what they post on social media will help them convey their social status to others. Making a social media account as a means of conveying information to others what they are doing, of course, to show their existence.
