Abstract

PARENTS' RATIONALITY TOWARDS CHILDREN WHO WORK AS PLASTIC BAG SELLERS AT MARKET 16 ILIR PALEMBANG This research focuses on the family background of children selling plastic bags and the rationality of parents giving permission for their children to work as plastic bag sellers at Pasar 16 Ilir Palembang. The research uses a qualitative descriptive perspective. Data was collected by means of observation, interviews, documentation. This research uses rational choice theory from James C. Coleman which explains that individual actions are influenced by certain considerations with a goal so that choices in action are formed. The results of this research state that family poverty is one of the factors that causes children to work. Several things are taken into consideration by parents in giving permission for their children to work, namely, from family background, parents give permission due to educational, economic and social environmental conditions at home. Meanwhile, parents' rationality is due to economic factors, unmet primary needs and children's desires.
