Abstract

Background: Learning activities are closely related to a person's motivation because someone with good learning motivation will also get good learning results. A dentist is required to be able to diagnose and treat soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity. This is studied further in oral medicine (OM). Therefore, a dental student is encouraged to learn more in oral medicine courses and have the motivation to do it. This study aimed to determine the comparison of the motivation level to learn oral medicine based on gender among Sriwijaya University students. Method: Analytical descriptive research with a cross-sectional study plan involved 60 respondents, divided into 30 female respondents and 30 male respondents taken from Sriwijaya University dental pre-clinic student class 2019, 2020, and 2021. Motivation questionnaire SMQ-II consists of five motivation components spread into 26 closed questions distributed by using Google form. Data were analyzed using the discriminant validity test Mann Whitney-U. Results: This research shows that the overall level of motivation of the female and male groups shows high learning motivation towards OM study. The results of the Mann Whitney-U test showed significant differences between the female and male groups in the components of grade motivation and career motivation (p<0.05) but the overall total score on the SMQ-II did not show a significant difference (p >0.05). Conclusion: Preclinical female and male students are highly motivation to study OM. Overall there is no significant difference between the female and male student groups in motivation learning to study OM.
