Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the bacteria that can cause infections with characteristics such as inflammation, abscess formation, and necrosis. Staphylococcus aureus is the etiology of several oral diseases such as periapical abscess and osteomyelitis. To reduce infection from bacteria, antibacterials can be given. Bay leaves are a herbal plant that can be used as an antibacterial agent because they contain tannin, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols and essential oil that can work as antibacterial. Objective: The purpose of this study aimed to find out the antibacterial potency of ethanol extract of bay leave (Syzygyum polyanthum) against Staphylococcus aureus. Method: This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The test group used ethanol extract of bay leavel with concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%, obtained by soxhletation method, 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate was used as a positive control and aquades as a negative control. The antibacterial potency was tested using the disc diffusion method to determine the value of the inhibition zone, the dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Result: This study revealed that the 75% concentration of ethanol extract of bay leave had the average inhibition zone value of 16.31 mm, but smaller than 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate. The MIC and MBC tests for the ethanol extract of bay leave were determined at a concentration of 50%. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of bay leave (Syzygyum polyanthum) had antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus.
