Abstract
Background. Esophageal foreign bodies are objects that are stuck in the esophagus either sharp or blunt objects or food due to intentional or unintentional swallowing. Coins are the most commonly ingested foreign bodies in children. Coins stuck in the esophagus can cause various complications. This study aims to determine the characteristics of patients with coin foreign bodies in the esophagus at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Methods. This study used descriptive observational method with secondary data in the form of medical record data of patients with coin foreign bodies in the esophagus at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital for the period 2019-2022 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling was done with total sampling technique. Results. The number of samples in this study were 34 patients. The most coin foreign body patients in the esophagus were in the age group 3 - 5 years and the age group 6 - 11 years with a total of 17 people each (50%). Male and female gender had a comparable number of 17 cases each (50%). The anatomical location of the coin foreign body was most commonly found in constriction 1, as many as 26 cases (76.5%). The most common type of coin found was a 1000 rupiah coin as many as 26 cases (76.5%). The most common symptom found was lump in the throat with a total of 31 people (91.2%) and most patients did not experience complications as many as 19 cases (55.9%). Conclusion. Coin foreign body patients in the esophagus are most commonly experienced by the age group 3 - 5 and the age group 6 - 11 years with comparable male and female gender, most commonly found in constriction 1, 1000 rupiah coins are most often swallowed, a lump in the throat is the most common complaint, and most patients do not experience complications.
