Abstract

Introduction: Pediculosis capitis is a disease caused by obligate ectoparasites called Pediculus humanus var. capitis or head lice. Pediculus humanus var. Capitis moves by creeping, close contact with someone is very likely to be infected. Pediculosis capitis spreads very quickly in crowded environments, such as Islamic boarding schools and orphanages. This study aims to determine the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and level of knowledge on the incidence of pediculosis capitis at the Al-Ittifaqiah Islamic Boarding School Indralaya. Method: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The sample of this study was obtained by stratified random sampling proportional. The number of samples was 118 students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data regarding sociodemographic characteristics and level of knowledge were obtained from filling out questionnaires. Data processing using SPSS with univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. Results: The prevalence of pediculosis capitis is 37,7%. In the results of the Fisher's Exact alternative test, there was a significant relationship between gender (p<0.001) with the incidence of pediculosis capitis. In the result of the Chi-Square test there was no correlation between age (p=0,650 and PR=1,033), respondent education level (p=0,633 and PR=1,091), father's education level (p=0,839 and PR=1,081), mother's education level (p=0,720 and PR= 1,177), and respondent level of knowledge (p=0,264 and PR=0,235 & 0,915) with the incidence of pediculosis capitis. Conclusion: Gender has a significant relationship with the incidence of pediculosis. Meanwhile, age, education level, education level of father and mother, occupation of father and mother, and level of knowledge have no relationship to the incidence of pediculosis capitis.
