Abstract

Pediculus capitis is an infectious disease of the hair and scalp due to infestation of Pediculus humanus capitis. Pediculosis capitis can spread widely, especially in crowded residential areas such as dormitories. This study aims to determine the association between hair characteristics and personal hygiene with the incidence of pediculosis capitis at Al-Ittifaqiah Islamic Boarding School Indralaya. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross sectional design. The study sample was obtained by proportional stratified random sampling. The total samples were 118 students who met the inclusion criterias and did not meet the exclusion criterias. The data processing used univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. The prevalence of pediculosis capitis is 37,3%. The results of bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test showed that there is a significant relationship between hair types (p=0.041), hair lengths (p<0.001), and use of towels (p<0.001). There is no significant relationship between hair colors (p=0.650), frequency of washing hair (p=0.869), use of hair cleaning materials (p=1.000), frequency of combing (p=1.000), use of combs (p=0.170), and use of pillows (p=0.318). The results of multivariate analysis with Cox Regression showed that the variables that most influenced the incidence of pediculosis capitis are hair length (p<0.001) and use of combs (p=0.028). There is a significant relationship between hair types, hair lengths, and use of towels with the incidence of pediculosis capitis. Hair lengths and use of combs are the variables that most influence the incidence of pediculosis capitis.
