Abstract

Illegal dental practice is an act of dentistry illegally by people who are not registered with the Medical Council and carry out practices like registered dentists, which increases in Indonesia. This study aim was to find out the level of public knowledge of illegal dental practices in the Tanjung Lago community, South Sumatera. One hundred people in Tanjung Lago, South Sumatra were asked to fill in the questionnaire. The survey showed that the majority of the people of Tanjung Lago had visited illegal dental practices and they know that those who perform these dental treatments were not dentists. The most common type of treatment was removable prosthodotic. The main reason they come to these illegal practitioners was due to the easy acces. Illegal dental practice is still widely visited by the community in performing dental care. This requires regular counseling efforts to increase public knowledge about the risks of going to illegal dental practices.
