Abstract

Oral ulcerations are common oral soft tissue disease. The treatment approach for the lesions by using mucobioadhesive system is aimed to obtain the maximum therapeutic effect from active compounds. Gambir (Uncaria gambir) is one of herbal medicine because it has active compound such as cathecins. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mucobioadhesive containing gambir extract effect in reducing pain and duration of wound closure of oral ulcerations. The design of this study was pretest-post test control group design. 24 samples were devided into two groups, gambir extract mucobioadhesive group and placebo group for 7 days 3 times daily. The severity of pain evaluated using VAS score, ulcerative area, and duration of wound closure were evaluated and analyzed by using SPSS ver. 22. The results showed that mucobioadhesive containing gambir extract significantly reduce the pain showed by reducing VAS score, lesion area showed by decreasing the means of diameter of lesion, and shortened the duration of lesion healing compare to placebo. It can be concluded that mucobioadhesive containing gambir extract has potential effect in reducing pain and accelerate oral ulceration.
