Abstract

Background: Mangosteen pericarp has been traditionally used to heal the wound. Mangosteen pericarp extract contains many active substances, such as xanthone, tanin and saponin. Those substances can increase the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that can stimulate new blood vessels formation. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Mangosteen pericarp extract on labial gingiva wound healing of wistar rats by determined the number of new blood vessels. Method: This study was experimental laboratory study used post-test group design. Wound were created on labial gingiva of 24 rats and randomly, divided into 4 groups. The wounds were applied three times a day for 4 days of mangosteen pericarp extract with dose 100 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, and aquadest as control. The rats were euthanized on fifth day. The wound tissues were histologically processed and stained with HE. The amount of new blood vessels were counted in five field microscope view with 400 zoom. The data were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA and followed by Post Hoc. Result: The result of this study showed that the number of new blood vessels were higher in groups treated with mangosteen pericarp extract than in control group. Formation of new blood vessels in group treated with 200 mg mangosteen pericarp extract was significantly higher than the control group and the other mangosteen pericarp extract group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Mangosteen pericarp extract can promote angiogenesis in wound healing.
